In 2024 alone, 393 natural hazard-related disasters were recorded worldwide, affecting 167.2 million people and causing an estimated USD 242 billion in economic damage. As climate risks become more frequent and costly, organizations face growing pressure to understand not only where vulnerabilities exist today, but where they may emerge tomorrow. Yet despite the vast amount of environmental data available, many climate risk assessments still rely on broad estimates and assumptions rather than direct measurements.

Since 2019, the Floodlight has been transforming decades of satellite observations into asset-level climate intelligence, providing organizations with precise risk assessments anywhere on Earth. Powered by AI, Floodlight's platform processes terabytes of satellite imagery to detect subtle changes in vegetation, soil moisture, temperature, and terrain that human analysts would often miss. Its predictive models can even forecast climate risks months in advance, giving businesses valuable time to prepare and adapt.

In this interview, CEO and Co-Founder Nate Wyne shares how Floodlight is helping companies, investors, and governments move beyond assumptions toward measurable climate intelligence, saving clients millions in potential losses.

Q: Can you start by telling us about Floodlight's mission and how you're using satellite data and AI to tackle climate risk analytics? What inspired you to focus on this particular challenge in the sustainability space?

Floodlight's mission is to democratize access to climate risk intelligence through satellite data and AI. We're essentially making the invisible visible – turning complex satellite observations into actionable insights that help organizations understand and mitigate climate risks at any location on Earth.

What inspired me was witnessing firsthand how climate events were catching businesses and communities off guard, despite the wealth of data available. There was this massive gap between the data being collected and practical, accessible risk analytics. I realized we could bridge that gap and help create a more resilient world.

Q: The climate analytics space is becoming increasingly crowded. What sets Floodlight apart from competitors, and how do you maintain your competitive edge?

What sets Floodlight apart is our combination of global coverage with hyperlocal precision. While many competitors focus on broad regional assessments, we provide asset-level risk analytics anywhere on the planet. Our AI models are trained on decades of satellite observations, giving us unprecedented accuracy in predicting climate risks. Most of our competitors use algorithms and estimated data to “guess” at where emissions and climate risk are. Logically speaking, measurements are always better than estimates.

We maintain our edge through continuous innovation in our machine learning algorithms and by building the most comprehensive satellite data processing pipeline in the industry. We're not just analyzing data – we're creating new ways to extract meaningful insights from it.

Q: Your Real Estate Sustainability Tool (REST) provides asset-level risk assessments globally. Can you share a specific example of how your technology has helped a client make better sustainability decisions or avoid climate-related risks?

One particularly impactful example involved a major European real estate investment fund evaluating a portfolio acquisition in Southeast Asia. Using REST, we identified that several properties in their target portfolio had significantly higher flood risk than traditional assessments suggested.

Our satellite-based analysis revealed subtle elevation changes and drainage patterns that ground-based surveys had missed. This intelligence helped them negotiate a better price and implement targeted flood mitigation measures, ultimately saving millions in potential losses and insurance costs.

Q: Since 2019, you've been delivering satellite-based analytics to companies, investors, and governments. What have been the biggest challenges in scaling your technology and building trust in satellite-derived data among traditional industries?

The biggest challenge has been educating traditional industries about the reliability and precision of satellite-derived data. Many sectors were accustomed to ground-based measurements and were skeptical of 'data from space.

We overcame this by consistently delivering accurate predictions and by being transparent about our methodologies. Most firms rely on black-boxing (“trust us”) for their data, but none of that can hold up to strict scrutiny. We also invested heavily in validation studies, comparing our satellite insights with ground truth data. Over time, as our predictions proved accurate – especially during major climate events – trust grew organically.

Can you share a recent milestone or success that you’re particularly proud of?

I'm particularly proud of our recent expansion into wildfire risk analytics. We successfully predicted and mapped wildfire risks across California with accuracy significantly higher than our competitors, helping insurance companies and property managers proactively protect assets. This milestone demonstrated that our platform can tackle multiple climate risks with the same underlying technology.

Q: How has collaborating with partners through Kickstart supported your journey? Are there any specific initiatives or results that stand out? Can you tell us about any collaboration, PoC, or deals that happened as a result of Kickstart?

Kickstart was transformational for Floodlight – it was the first European-based accelerator that helped us see how much potential there is in the European market for firms with global ambitions. Before Kickstart, we were primarily focused on North American opportunities, but the program opened our eyes to Europe's sophisticated approach to sustainability and climate risk management.

Through Kickstart, we secured our first major European client – a Swiss consultancy company that became a cornerstone customer. The program also connected us with regulatory experts who helped us navigate European data privacy requirements, which was crucial for our expansion. The mentorship and network access were invaluable in establishing our European presence.

Q: What role does AI play in your analysis today, and where do you see the biggest opportunities for innovation?

AI is the backbone of everything we do – from processing terabytes of satellite imagery to identifying subtle patterns that indicate emerging climate risks. Our machine learning models can detect changes in vegetation health, soil moisture, and surface temperatures that human analysts would miss.

The biggest opportunity I see is in predictive analytics – moving from 'what is happening' to 'what will happen.' We're developing AI models that can forecast climate risks months in advance, giving organizations unprecedented lead time to prepare and adapt.

Q: What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs who are building solutions for a more sustainable and responsible economy?

First, focus on solving real problems with measurable impact – sustainability isn't just about good intentions, it's about delivering tangible value, usually in financial terms, to avoid being politically isolated from half the population. Second, don't underestimate the importance of data quality and transparency. Third, be patient with market education – many industries are just beginning to understand the urgency of climate adaptation.

Most importantly, think globally from day one. Climate change is a global challenge that requires global solutions, and the market opportunities are enormous for those who can scale effectively.

Q: Looking ahead, what’s your vision for the future of Floodlight? Where do you hope to be in 3–5 years?

In 3-5 years, I envision Floodlight as the global standard for climate risk intelligence. We'll be providing real-time risk analytics for millions of assets worldwide, with AI models that can predict climate impacts with unprecedented accuracy.

I see us expanding beyond risk assessment into climate adaptation planning – not just telling organizations what risks they face, but providing AI-powered recommendations for how to build resilience. We'll be the trusted partner that helps the world adapt to our changing climate.

Last year marked 10 years of Kickstart. What does it mean to you to be part of this ecosystem, and how do you think Kickstart has contributed to shaping the innovation landscape in Switzerland and beyond?

Being part of Kickstart's ecosystem means being connected to a community that truly understands the challenges of building impactful technology companies. Kickstart has been instrumental in shaping Switzerland's position as a global innovation hub, particularly in sustainability tech.

One memorable moment was during our First Day presentation – I was incredibly nervous, but the feedback and connections we made that day directly led to partnerships that are still driving our growth today. Kickstart didn't just provide funding and mentorship; it gave us credibility and opened doors across Europe that would have taken years to access otherwise. The program's focus on connecting startups with established industry players was exactly what we needed to scale our impact. Also, the team was much less ‘here’s a sweatshirt’ and much more ‘here is background on this target, go close to them’. It was a huge help and a good check to get rid of the fluff that often pervades all of entrepreneurship.

Lastly, being surrounded by some of the most spectacular beauty in the world (Swiss mountains) is a perfect driver for us to know the stakes of what we’re doing.
